Economic principles in teaching Chinese as a foreign language
The practical situation of Chinese teaching in American universities requires that some detailed language skills which are non-consequential in real communication (which do not affect intelligibility) be substandardized, thus reserving valuable class time and resources for dissemination of cultural knowledge -- the major function of foreign language courses in general education. As more than half of the Chinese population and the majority of overseas Chinese students come from dialectal backgrounds, allowing substandard pronunciations and incorporating substandard variations can be a useful measure to effective and economic language teaching.
